The Restitution Series is a Neo Surrealist depiction of my female identity.
On the surface, the subjects allude to a whimsical freedom and a yearning for the sixties. While reminiscent of an earlier time, there is a rebellious spark within each piece. However, beyond the superficial entity, there is a fight to assert independence against threatening objectification and societal expectations.
Beyond the facade of beauty, the female subjects depicted refuse to adhere to gentle femininity and the social constructs of society. They are an entity of their own, and they do not rely on the confines of femininity or sexuality. The Restitution Series fights against the connotations of how women should behave and exist within the world. The series presents an eminent distain for society in a exposing and raw manner.
As a woman, I feel like I am constantly at odds with society. It has been a battle to own my sexuality and voice. I am not unlike other women, who have been sexually assaulted, harassed, and terrorized, based on the fact that we are seen as sexual objects and not as human beings. There are minuet moments of my life where I feel uncomfortable, watched, or potentially in danger, and the men in my life simply cannot relate. There are also other ways that society judges women far harsher than men, and I am tired of it. For me, the Restitution series is about asserting my voice as a woman and as an artist. I refuse to adhere to what society wants of me.
